The project has investigated local existing and proposed initiatives around the provision of alternative forms of public transport to counterbalance the current reliance on individual car, campervan and coach use to visit the Burren. This reliance places a significant burden on the local roads infrastructure, which is not designed for such intense use. The result is unsafe and illegal parking, congestion, damage and delays.
Examples of international best practice in this area have also been investigated, and there are some interesting models available, however, given the differences in circumstances and conditions, it has become obvious that the Burren has to develop its own solutions to this issue.
Burren Connect Project are working with Clare Accessible Transport to provide environmentally sustainable public transport options for people living in and visiting the Burren.
