At a series of public meetings held in May and June of 2007 to discuss signage in the Burren, it was accepted by all who attended the meetings and those who submitted comments and suggestions to the consultancy team (Brendan McGrath and Associates) that the current state of signage in the Burren was chaotic and counter productive and that there was a need for a more effective strategy. The consultancy team worked closely with Clare County Council and the National Roads Authority to research and deliver a signage plan that includes the following elements:
• Public meetings and a public consultation process
• An audit of existing signage in the Burren (including villages and visitor attractions)
• An assessment of international practice, such as legislation, standards and models of best practice.
• A plan that outlines key principles, and recommendations (policy proposals) for signage to and from the Burren, signage within the Burren, directional signage for main and smaller visitor attractions in the countryside and villages/towns.
• The plan also makes recommendations on signage for accommodation and services, non-directional signage and placename spelling. A recommendation on the work programme for the implementation of the signage plan is also provided.
• A suite of signage for a range of uses such as Town/Village Name Boards, Burren Information Points, Town/Village Information Boards, Directional Sign to Viewing Points, Viewing Point Signs, Walking/Cycling Signs.
• A design template for Directional and Visitor Attraction Signage at Leamaneh junction
• Schematic Directional Signage for Visitor Attractions at Newtown, Corker Hill & Doolin junctions, including Advanced Directional Signage and Confirmatory Signage.
• Schematic Directional Signs only for Visitor Attractions at other main junctions
• Visitor Attraction Signage on N67 and N18, agreed in conjunction with NRA
