This section of the web site focuses on Tourism business in the Burren. Through the Research Programme we aim to increase our understanding how it is organised and marketed and to quantify its positive and negative impacts. In investigating the possible application of Ecotourism principles and standards and Geopark Status in the Burren region we hope to find ways of increasing the positive contribution tourism makes to the local economy and to minimise the negative impacts it makes on the environment.
Increasing the levels of awareness and respect for the environment and its people amongst visitors is the focus of our Visitor Information Programme. Information on the nature of the landscape and its history, local communities and their culture, managed access and codes of conduct are available in a variety of forms at nine Burren Information Points. A miniature guide to the Burren “The Burren Passport” provides a comprehensive overview of the Burren landscape, communities and services. Information boards at Viewing Points and popular amenities disseminate local information and the Burren Code in several languages.
